During a single day, the highest recorded total was 1,490 and there were 4,869 downloads of this website.
A conservative estimate of the overall number of readers would be somewhere around 18,000. (In many cases people who downloaded the contents of this website made printouts for friends, relatives and co-workers who did not have access to the internet.)
E-mail and comments left in the guest book make it clear that Cayuga County residents still have very strong opinions about this homicide and the legal system's apparent inability to solve it. Obviously, there is no way to assign validity or reliability coefficients to this material, so in their absence I will cite two correlates to support the statements that have been made in this section.
Correlate #1 In February of 1993, volunteers collected over 10,000 signatures on a petition urging a new trial for Thomas Bianco. The petition was signed by county legislators, corrections officers, former state police officers and Carol Ford, one of the jurors who convicted Mr. Bianco. Correlate # 2 In June of 1998, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Grant Jaquith made this statement at David Weinstein's sentencing in federal court: "The cynical view of the legal practice while certainly widespread has reached a cynicism of a different and far lower level in Cayuga County than elsewhere [and] I think that Mr. Weinstein bears a lot of the blame for it." (Source: The Syracuse Post-Standard 9/18/98 page A-8)
There are approximately 40,000 registered voters in Cayuga County at the present time. David Weinstein represented a number of prosecution witnesses during Thomas Bianco's trial including the star witness, Thomas Calescibetta. Mr. Weinstein is currently serving time on federal weapons and drug charges. |
